Shelley Boyle from Ingredients stopped by our Pasadena showroom last Friday to check out some animal friendly sandals and she brought us treats! It was such a nice surprise and great timing since it was Henny’s birthday (co-owner of Alternative Outfitters). Ingredients creates delicious vegan baked goods that come in numbered brown bags. Want to know more about the number thing? Just click here. Their website explains it best. It’s such a neat concept and we love it! Here’s what we thought about the sweet treats.
First up was #3, a combination of dark chocolate, peanuts and oatmeal. This one was my personal favorite. It wasn’t overly sweet but didn’t have that “healthy” taste that might be expected from their wholesome ingredients. It’s sweetened with sucanant, which is a non-refined cane sugar with a high molasses content which gives the cookies a yummy caramel flavor.
Next came #11, a cute little mini muffin shape that was just asking to be filled with something like vegan ice cream or fresh strawberries with soy cream. This much sweeter cookie had a wonderful pairing of macadamia nuts and white chocolate and also a sprinkle of coconut. With it’s tiny bowl-shape and sweet flavor it’s perfect for creating fun bite sized desserts for entertaining. Though this yummy cookie doesn’t need anything extra and is delicious by itself.
Similar to #11 is the #8 cookie. This one is made with spelt flour making it more dense. It’s full of walnuts and dark chocolate and has a less subtle sweetness than it’s white chocolate cousin. This hearty cookie has some crunch and we think it would go great dipped in a glass of cold almond milk.
The 2nd cookie in the fun mini muffin shape is #19. It had a very light and airy texture. It also contained dark chocolate and walnuts (like #8) but was sweeter and richer since it’s made with vegan butter. Watch out because it’s easy to eat the whole bag!
The granola, #58, had me wishing for a bowl and spoon so I could eat it like cereal . It’s sweetened with maple syrup & brown sugar but is not overly sweet and has a wonderful crunchy texture. It’s full of cranberries, dried banana, raisins, flax seeds, coconut and rolled oats! This yummy granola would make a great snack. I took it home with me and ate it all weekend with soy milk and fresh berries.
The cookies all come in bags of 12 for $5.99 and the granola is a 12 oz bag for $7.99. You can head right to the Ingredients website to purchase any of these delectable sweets you’ve seen here and read a little more about the company. Thanks Shelley for letting us try all of your wonderful creations!
