Can a vegan diet save the world? According to a new report from the UN, the answer is “yes.”The Guardian writes that “a global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty, and the worst impacts of climate change.” The report notes that the Western preference for meat- and dairy-heavy diets is “unsustainable,” especially as the population is expected to grow to 9.1 billion by 2050.

From Medical News Today: Childhood obesity is a major problem in the US. Over the last 3 decades, the rate of obesity has more than doubled in children aged 6-11 years and quadrupled in adolescents aged 12-19. As well as raising the risk of obesity later in life, children and adolescents who are obese have greater risk of stroke, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a population-based study found 70% of obese 5-17-year-olds have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease.


Researchers of a new study, led by Dr. Michael Macknin, a staff pediatrician at Cleveland Clinic Children’s, OH, suggest a plant-based diet low in fat may be more effective for lowering the risk of heart disease in children and adolescents. Read more from Medical News Today.

From the ALDF blog on 2/24/15: On January 22, ALDF offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction after a Sacramento puppy was found burned to death on a North Sacramento street. The 8-9 month-old puppy had been locked in a dog crate and burned alive. Although this grim case sickens us, we are announcing some great forward movement: thanks to the dedicated work of the Sacramento SPCA, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s department, and the Sacramento Metro Fire department, an arrest has been made.
